Q: What are some METHODOLOGIES to help students with homework? (part 2 of 2)

When determining methodologies to assist your student with homework, first find out if they are a visual, auditory, or kinesthetic learner. You can find some short quizzes online or here is one you can use. Once you determine their learning style - review the methodologies below to assist them in learning new skills and concepts.

For Visual Learners they learn by seeing. Therefore, consider the following based on their grade level:

Primary School

  • Whiteboard and marker

  • Visual timer

  • Magnetic letters

  • Matching tiles

  • Sidewalk chalk

Secondary School

  • Color coding

  • Organized notes

  • Graphic organizers

  • Flashcards

  • Visual aids and apps

For Auditory Learners they learn by listening. Therefore, consider the following based on their grade level:

Primary School

  • Reading aloud

  • Creating rhymes and acronyms

  • Storytelling

  • Listening games

  • Auditory learning apps

Secondary School

  • Lectures and recording lectures

  • Discussion and debate with others

  • Teaching others verbally

  • Audiobooks and podcasts

  • Voice notes, text to speech apps

  • Music as background when studying or white noise

For Kinesthetic/Tactile Learners they learn by doing. Therefore, consider the following based on their grade level:

Primary School

  • Active learning - standing, yoga ball, fidget toys

  • Movement breaks and physical games

  • Math manipulatives, trace letters in sand

  • Role playing

  • Field trips

Secondary School

  • Project-based learning/Hands on activities

  • Experiments/Lab work

  • Study breaks

  • Mind/Body techniques (yoga, breathing exercises, etc.)

Although this list may be helpful - the truth is we all learn through all of the mediums above or a combination thereof. However, it is helpful to know what type of learner your student leans towards, and provide the appropriate methodologies for their learning profile.
